## The weekend in 60 seconds

- **Oil damage is still unconfirmed.** The Houthis claimed strikes on Saudi energy sites late last week. As of Sunday morning, Saudi Aramco had not confirmed or denied damage. CNBC reported that Aramco "did not immediately respond" to a request for comment ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/saudi-arabia-houthi-missile-drone-interceptions.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), 8:49 AM ET Sunday).
- **A new intercept wave kept Gulf risk live.** Saudi Arabia's coalition said Sunday it intercepted Houthi drones and missiles aimed at Riyadh, Khamis Mushait and the south. That is a verified coalition claim, not a confirmed oil hit ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/saudi-arabia-houthi-missile-drone-interceptions.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), citing SPA / coalition spokesperson Turki Al-Maliki, Oct 25).
- **Trump said there will not be a strike today.** On Fox he asked whether to "make a deal with them, or do I finish them off?" Later he told reporters the U.S. would not strike Iran today ([CBS live updates](https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/iran-war-trump-us-oil-gas-prices-strait-of-hormuz-midterms/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), 11:14 AM ET; [Times of Israel](https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog%5Fentry/trump-says-us-wont-strike-iran-today-amid-rising-tensions/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [AP via Fortune](https://fortune.com/2026/10/25/iran-war-messages-us-intermediaries-diplomacy-negotiations/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).
- **Brent closed Friday at a six-month high.** December Brent settled at $116.72 a barrel, up about 6.2% on the week, after rising tensions and supply worries ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/saudi-arabia-houthi-missile-drone-interceptions.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Portfolio Terminal week review](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 23–24).
- **This week is dense.** The Fed announces its rate decision at 2:00 PM ET Wednesday. Alphabet and Microsoft report after that close. Amazon reports Thursday night. Advance GDP and September personal income (including PCE) land Thursday morning ([Federal Reserve October calendar](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/2026-october.htm); [BEA schedule](https://www.bea.gov/news/schedule?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [CNBC earnings playbook](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/earnings-week-alphabet-microsoft-amazon.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 25).

## The big story: quiet indexes, loud names

**What happened.** On the surface, last week looked calm. The S&P 500 fell 0.47%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.71%. The Dow rose 0.41%, and the Russell 2000 — smaller companies — rose 2.00% ([T. Rowe Price weekly update](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/wall-street-futures-dip-after-ai-rout-telecoms-slide-4968816?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

Under that calm surface, single names whipped. Meta Platforms fell 9.4% for the week. Tesla rose 4.9%. Alphabet fell about 6%. That is roughly 14 percentage points from best to worst among the big tech names that usually move together ([Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Tracking the Trade](https://www.trackingthetrade.com/p/week-in-review-oct-19-23-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). The equal-weight S&P 500, where every company gets the same vote, rose 1.13% while the regular S&P fell 0.47% — so the average stock beat the famous ones ([Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Tracking the Trade](https://www.trackingthetrade.com/p/week-in-review-oct-19-23-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

Thursday did most of the damage. Meta fell about 7% that day after its results. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 6.7%, its worst session since June. The Nasdaq had its steepest one-day drop since early June ([Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/steep-bill-for-ai-buildout-punishes-meta-other-tech-favorites-4967187?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**What the Meta report actually said.** Revenue rose 26% to $64.60 billion. Capital spending in the quarter, including finance-lease principal, was $34.91 billion — more than the $32.79 billion operations brought in — so free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion. Full-year 2026 CapEx was narrowed to $135–145 billion from $130–145 billion. The company also said it will create a new non-voting Class C share class ([Meta IR](https://investor.atmeta.com/investor-news/press-release-details/2026/Meta-Reports-Third-Quarter-2026-Results/default.aspx?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 21). Investors were not objecting to the ads business. They were objecting to the bill, and to how it gets paid.

**How this reaches stocks.** It works in three steps:

1. **The CapEx test.** When a big AI spender raises the spending floor and free cash flow turns negative, the market asks whether the build-out still pays for itself.
2. **The chip chain.** Chip equipment and semiconductor names move with that question. One hyperscaler's guidance can pull a whole sleeve lower in a single session.
3. **This week's stack.** Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon now walk into the same CapEx spotlight — on the same calendar as a Fed decision and a fresh GDP print.

**Our read:** last week was a dispersion week, not an index week. The headline indexes hid how wide the gap was inside tech. That makes this week's megacap reports a real test of whether Thursday's CapEx scare fades or spreads.

## What moved markets last week

**1\. The AI spending bill came due again.** Meta's results lit the fuse on Thursday. Lam Research fell nearly 12% the next session after its own report. Semiconductors as a group finished the week down about 3.2% after that one ugly day ([Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Reuters](https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/steep-bill-for-ai-buildout-punishes-meta-other-tech-favorites-4967187?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [T. Rowe Price](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). **Our read:** demand for AI chips is not the debate right now. Who pays for the buildings and power, and at what cost to shareholders, is.

**2\. Money rotated into the average stock.** While mega-cap tech slipped, the Dow and small caps rose. Energy and health care led the sector list. Communication services, home to Meta and Alphabet, was the weakest sleeve ([Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [T. Rowe Price](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). **Our read:** this looks more like trimming the crowded trade than running for the exits.

**3\. Oil climbed while Treasury yields eased.** Brent rose about 6.2% on the week. The 10-year Treasury yield ended near 4.99%, after briefly closing under 5% on Thursday for the first time in weeks ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/saudi-arabia-houthi-missile-drone-interceptions.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [T. Rowe Price](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Usually higher oil and lower yields do not travel together. This time, selling in AI stocks and Gulf headlines both pushed money into Treasuries. **Our read:** the oil story into Monday still hinges on whether any official confirm or deny arrives — that gate is still open.

## Stocks to keep an eye on

These are catalysts, not recommendations.

- **Alphabet (GOOGL), Wednesday.** Third-quarter results after the close, with a call at 4:30 PM ET ([Alphabet IR](https://abc.xyz/investor/news/news-details/2026/Alphabet-Announces-Date-of-Third-Quarter-2026-Financial-Results-Conference-Call-2026-8tpGZsLS6v/default.aspx?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 6). CapEx and cloud commentary are what the tape will hear after Meta's week.
- **Microsoft (MSFT), Wednesday.** Fiscal 2027 first-quarter results after the close, with a webcast at 5:30 PM ET / 2:30 PM PT ([Microsoft Source](https://news.microsoft.com/source/2026/10/07/microsoft-announces-quarterly-earnings-release-date-69/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 7). Azure growth and AI infrastructure spend sit in the same CapEx conversation.
- **Amazon (AMZN), Thursday.** Third-quarter results after the close, with a call at 5:00 PM ET ([CNBC earnings playbook](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/earnings-week-alphabet-microsoft-amazon.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 25). AWS and retail both matter; so does how it talks about AI capacity.
- **SpaceX (SPCX), Monday.** A contractual lock-up tranche becomes eligible to trade in the first regular session after Saturday's day-135 date. Eligibility is not a forced sale — Rule 144 and trading windows still apply (company lock-up / prospectus calendars; day-135 date Sat Oct 24). Structure, not a dump order.
- **Intel (INTC), Thursday.** Reports after the close the same night as Amazon ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/earnings-week-alphabet-microsoft-amazon.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Another read on chip demand after Thursday's semiconductor washout.
- **ExxonMobil and Chevron, Friday.** Both report in the morning ([StockTitan earnings calendar](https://www.stocktitan.net/articles/earnings-calendar-week-of-october-26-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). With Brent at a six-month high and oil damage still unverified, energy results land into an unusual backdrop.

## The week ahead (all times ET)

**Monday, Oct 26.** SpaceX lock-up eligibility for the day-135 tranche. Verizon reports before the open ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/earnings-week-alphabet-microsoft-amazon.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [StockTitan](https://www.stocktitan.net/articles/earnings-calendar-week-of-october-26-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**Tuesday, Oct 27.** Housing starts and related housing data in the morning (Census / calendars cited by [StockTitan](https://www.stocktitan.net/articles/earnings-calendar-week-of-october-26-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Coca-Cola and Boeing report before the open ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/25/earnings-week-alphabet-microsoft-amazon.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Day one of the two-day FOMC meeting ([Federal Reserve](https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm)).

**Wednesday, Oct 28.** **FOMC statement at 2:00 PM, Chair press conference at 2:30 PM** ([Federal Reserve October calendar](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/2026-october.htm)). No Summary of Economic Projections at this meeting ([FOMC calendars](https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/fomccalendars.htm)). After the close: **Alphabet** (call 4:30 PM) and **Microsoft** (webcast 5:30 PM). Analyst consensus, not a Fed commitment, currently leans toward a hold ([AFP](https://www.afp.com/en/fed-expected-hold-rates-steady-days-ahead-us-midterms?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 25 color).

**Thursday, Oct 29.** Advance estimate of third-quarter GDP and September Personal Income and Outlays (includes PCE) at 8:30 AM ([BEA schedule](https://www.bea.gov/news/schedule?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Weekly jobless claims the same morning. After the close: **Amazon** (call 5:00 PM) and Intel.

**Friday, Oct 30.** ExxonMobil and Chevron in the morning. Employment Cost Index at 8:30 AM ([StockTitan economic calendar](https://www.stocktitan.net/articles/earnings-calendar-week-of-october-26-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**All week:** Watch for any Aramco or Saudi energy ministry statement that confirms or denies last week's oil-infrastructure claims. Until then, treat damage as unverified.

## Number of the week: 14 percentage points

That is roughly how far Meta (−9.4%) and Tesla (+4.9%) finished apart over the same five sessions, while the S&P 500 moved less than half a percent ([Portfolio Terminal](https://portfolio-terminal.com/blog/stock-market-week-in-review-october-22-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Tracking the Trade](https://www.trackingthetrade.com/p/week-in-review-oct-19-23-2026?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). One quiet index week can still be a loud week inside the names that drive the narrative. That gap is why this week's CapEx answers from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon matter more than the average daily move in the S&P.

## What could change the picture

- **A clear answer on oil damage.** A confirmed hit on Saudi pipeline or refinery infrastructure would likely push oil, and inflation worries, higher into the Fed meeting. A clear official deny would cut that premium. Neither has arrived as of Sunday afternoon.
- **CapEx language from Alphabet, Microsoft or Amazon.** If the next three megacaps sound measured and funded, Thursday's Meta scare can fade. If they raise the spending bar again without a clear path to cash returns, the AI sleeve can stay under pressure past the Fed decision.

We'll be back next Sunday night.
