# The AI Bill Came Due. Now Comes a Crowded Week.

*Alphabet, Amazon and Intel turned a calm week into a tech selloff. Here's why investors are now grading AI spending on cash, not hype, and what Apple, AMD, Tuesday's midterms, Friday's jobs report and the Doha talks could change.*

## The weekend in 60 seconds

- **Talks, not a deal.** Iranian negotiators spent a third straight day in Doha with Qatari mediators on Sunday. Iran's foreign minister said talks on a "two-day proposal" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz are going on, but nothing is final ([Reuters via CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/01/iranian-negotiators-in-qatar-to-continue-talks-to-end-war-reuters.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Nov 1).
- **The strike question waits for the vote.** President Trump has said there will be no new U.S. attacks on Iran before Tuesday's election, but he has not ruled them out after it ([Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/commodities-news/iranian-negotiators-in-doha-to-continue-talks-to-end-the-usiran-war-official-says-4989743?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Nov 1).
- **Tech ended October hurt.** The Nasdaq lost 2.0% last week and more than 5% for October, its worst month since March 2025 ([T. Rowe Price](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Bravias weekly wrap](https://braviasfinancial.com/news/bravias-weekly-market-wrap-up-10-30-2026/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30).
- **This week is packed.** Apple and Palantir report Monday, AMD on Election Day Tuesday, and the October jobs report lands Friday at 8:30 AM ET ([CNBC week ahead](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30).

## The big story: investors want to see the cash

**Why it matters.** For two years, spending big on AI was treated as a sign of strength. Last week, investors started asking a harder question: when does the spending pay for itself? The answer they got from some of the biggest companies was "not yet."

**What happened.** Alphabet missed earnings and revenue expectations and reported negative free cash flow. Its stock fell about 12% on Thursday, its worst one-day drop on record ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [CNBC Investing Club](https://www.cnbc.com/investingclub/2026/10/31/stocks-started-the-week-with-promise-but-ended-in-despair.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30–31). Amazon also missed. Its cloud unit, AWS, grew at its fastest pace in nearly five years, but Amazon became the third giant, after Alphabet and Meta, to report negative free cash flow ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [CNBC Investing Club](https://www.cnbc.com/investingclub/2026/10/31/stocks-started-the-week-with-promise-but-ended-in-despair.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

Free cash flow is the money left after a company pays its bills and its building costs. When it turns negative, the company is spending more than it brings in.

**The contrast.** Microsoft showed what investors want. Azure grew 48%, and capital spending came in below expectations. Its stock slipped only 0.5% for the week, a good result in a bad week for tech ([CNBC Investing Club](https://www.cnbc.com/investingclub/2026/10/31/stocks-started-the-week-with-promise-but-ended-in-despair.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 31).

**Our read:** the market is not saying AI is over. It is saying growth alone is no longer enough. Companies that can show spending discipline and a path to cash are being treated very differently from those that can't.

## What moved markets last week

**1\. Big Tech earnings, then a Friday selloff.** The S&P 500 fell 1.8% Friday, its worst day since June. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% that day ([AP](https://apnews.com/article/wall-street-stocks-dow-nasdaq-a01d3551e794fed1a0c317c20bc3f0a2?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30). For the week, the S&P 500 lost 0.57%, the Nasdaq 2.00% and the Dow 0.85% ([T. Rowe Price](https://www.troweprice.com/personal-investing/resources/insights/global-markets-weekly-update.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). **Why:** the Alphabet and Amazon reports came back to back, and the cash-flow worry spread across tech.

**2\. Intel dragged the chip stocks down.** Intel gave a weak outlook Thursday night, and its stock fell more than 28% Friday ([CNBC Investing Club](https://www.cnbc.com/investingclub/2026/10/31/stocks-started-the-week-with-promise-but-ended-in-despair.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 31). The iShares Semiconductor ETF fell 9.1% Friday ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). **Why:** Intel pointed to weaker PC chip demand, partly because memory has become so expensive. That raised questions for other chipmakers too.

**3\. A Fed that held, but split toward hikes.** On Wednesday the Fed kept its key rate at 3.75% to 4.00%. The vote was 10–2\. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack voted against it because they wanted to *raise* rates by a quarter point ([Federal Reserve statement](https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20261028a.htm), Oct 28). On Friday, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said the Fed needs "at least two more" quarter-point hikes ([Dallas Fed](https://www.dallasfed.org/news/speeches/logan/2026/lkl261030?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/economic-indicators/fed-needs-at-least-two-more-rate-hikes-logan-says-4988462?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30). **Why it matters:** when tech sells off, investors sometimes hope the Fed will soften. This Fed is leaning the other way. **Our read:** that helps explain why money moved into health care and consumer staples instead of buying the tech dip ([Bravias weekly wrap](https://braviasfinancial.com/news/bravias-weekly-market-wrap-up-10-30-2026/?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

## Stocks to keep an eye on

These are catalysts, not recommendations.

- **Apple (AAPL), Monday after the close.** First earnings call under CEO John Ternus, with the call at 5:00 PM ET ([FXEmpire](https://www.fxempire.com/forecasts/article/the-week-ahead-ai-earnings-u-s-midterms-and-jobs-data-test-u-s-stocks-1641771?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [TradingKey](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262262871-us-midterm-elections-october-jobs-report-apple-palantir-amd-earnings-tradingkey?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Nov 1). It's the best Magnificent Seven stock this year, so expectations are high ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).
- **Palantir (PLTR), Monday after the close.** Watch commercial and government growth and its full-year outlook ([TradingKey](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262262871-us-midterm-elections-october-jobs-report-apple-palantir-amd-earnings-tradingkey?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). **Our read:** it's a test of whether AI software can hold up while AI hardware spending is under the microscope.
- **AMD (AMD), Tuesday after the close.** Call at 5:00 PM ET. Data center and AI chip demand are the focus ([TradingKey](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262262871-us-midterm-elections-october-jobs-report-apple-palantir-amd-earnings-tradingkey?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). It lands on Election Day, right after Intel's PC warning.
- **Qualcomm (QCOM) and Arm (ARM), Wednesday after the close.** Phone, PC and data center chip demand ([TradingKey](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262262871-us-midterm-elections-october-jobs-report-apple-palantir-amd-earnings-tradingkey?ref=darkstonecapital.ai); [CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).
- **Alphabet (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN), no report this week.** Their stocks will show whether last week's selling keeps going or settles down. **Our read:** watch how they trade around the AMD and Apple results.

## The week ahead (all times ET)

**Monday, Nov 2.** ISM manufacturing at 10:00 AM. Apple and Palantir report after the close ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**Tuesday, Nov 3.** **Election Day.** All 435 House seats and about a third of the Senate are on the ballot ([TradingKey](https://www.tradingkey.com/analysis/stocks/us-stocks/262262871-us-midterm-elections-october-jobs-report-apple-palantir-amd-earnings-tradingkey?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). JOLTS job openings and factory orders at 10:00 AM. AMD reports after the close ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). Some races may not be called on election night.

**Wednesday, Nov 4.** ADP private payrolls at 8:15 AM. Trade balance at 8:30 AM. ISM services at 10:00 AM. Qualcomm and Arm report after the close ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**Thursday, Nov 5.** Jobless claims, productivity and unit labor costs at 8:30 AM ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**Friday, Nov 6.** **October jobs report at 8:30 AM.** FactSet consensus is 55,000 jobs with unemployment at 4.2%. University of Michigan sentiment at 10:00 AM ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)).

**A bit of history.** Since 1934, the Dow has gained 2.8% on average in the eight trading days around midterm Election Day, per the Stock Trader's Almanac ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai)). An average is not a promise, and it can hide bad years.

## Number of the week: 1.4%

That's how much S&P 500 companies are beating earnings estimates by this quarter, on average. The five-year average is 7.5%, and the 10-year average is 8%. FactSet says the drop is almost entirely due to Meta and Alphabet ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/stock-market-next-week-outlook-for-nov-2-6-2026.html?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), citing FactSet, Oct 30). Earnings are still growing fast, but the cushion of easy beats is gone. That's why each big report this week carries more weight.

## What could change the picture

- **Doha, and what comes after the vote.** A deal to reopen Hormuz could take pressure off oil. Brent rose about 13% in October ([Reuters via Euronext](https://live.euronext.com/en/financial-news/oil-prices-set-fourth-straight-monthly-gains-tanker-attack-highlights-supply-risks?ref=darkstonecapital.ai), Oct 30). If talks stall and strikes start again after Tuesday, oil and inflation worries could climb. Right now, both outcomes are still possible.
- **A hot jobs report.** With two Fed officials already voting to hike, strong hiring and wage numbers on Friday could make a December rate hike more likely. **Our read:** that would be a second headwind for tech, on top of the cash-flow worries.

We'll be back next Sunday night.
